Seeking to Understand Benedict XVI’s “Eschatology”

Last October 4, 2010, I was tasked to develop the theme “The Eschatology of Pope Benedict XVI” as my contribution to the Seminar on Dogma facilitated by Fr. Francis Gustilo, SDB., and Fr. Catalino Arevalo, SJ.

For this occasion, I prepared a 9-page handout and a powerpoint presentation. I am not quite sure if you are interested, but since they are available, I thought, I might as well share them.

Attention: Reminder for All re: Final Evaluation

Mga beloved bro, this “intermediate state,” i.e., that period between our last class meeting and the very last day of this first semester (SY 2010-2011), is coming to an end. I believe that some important reminders are in order.

1. To date, only two groups have come to me so far to show me their multimedia presentations. These presentations, I believe, are ready to be uploaded. Yesterday, we have already created our youtube account… it is now active… so we can now start uploading your multimedia presentations (fruits of your study, reflection and creativity). But before you upload your project, (1st) make sure that you first come to me and have your work approved. Once you have the “green” signal, (2nd) you may then approach the DBCS IT Technician (Michael) so that he may upload your project. We are using the same youtube account for all the your projects.

2. Regarding the second requirement: the individual film theological review. First of all, there are only two films you are required to watch and review theologically: (1) PURGATORY, and (2) AFTERLIFE. Please watch attentively and critically both films. To help and guide you in your film review, here are some lead questions: What are the eschatological themes contained in the movies? How does each movie present these themes, i.e., what is its understanding or interpretation of these themes? Finally, as a student of Catholic Eschatology, what is your response to each movie’s interpretation/understanding of the eschatological themes? You can point out a maximum of two themes per movie (but a minimum of one theme per movie). To post a comment, please go to the trailers of the “required” movies (on this blog), click on ”leave a comment” and write your comment. Make sure you write your name (first name initial and complete family name) with your comment.

On “Eschatology and History”

Here, I offer my students a summary of Zachary Hayes’ discussion on the subject “Eschatology and History” (Cf. Hayes, Vision of a Future, 126-154.)
It begins with the discussion on the Theology of History, and then it moves to address the challenge of reconciling the notion of the transcendental future with the conviction that Christians must be involved in the historical process with other human beings.

Understanding the doctrine on Purgatory

This coming Friday, 13th of August, will be the last day of your class in Catholic Eschatology. For this last class, I propose that we take a closer look at the Catholic doctrine on “purgatory.”

Please, read the eleventh chapter of McKeating’s book, pages 217-235, for our last discussion.

Unfortunately, we do not have time to discuss the theme “Eschatology and History.” However, I posted on this blog my summary of Zachary Hayes’ treatment on the subject. I suggest that my students access the document and read the my summaryor, better, read Hayes’ discussion.
